http://www.mepislovers.org/forums/showt ... hp?p=58780
Adding Pixma ip1600 printer:
o Download the driver and the instructions for ip2200 from Canon (yes, for ip2200; it must be a very close model): here
o Install libxml-1.8.7.
o Connect to USB and turn on the printer
o Install both .rpm driver files (first, convert to .deb files using a alien command and then use dpkg -i to install these .deb files).
o Don't install the printer per Canon's instructions, but use Add Printer wizard in the kubuntu's System Settings -> Printers. When you get there to select a printer you want to add, it shows you printers seen by the system, and the ip1600 is visible in two different segments of the tree it shows. Don't select the one described as with status readback. This one leads nowhere. Use the other one.
o The test page didn't want to print, so I ignored it and tested the printer on kWrite with a simple text.
o First, the printer wouldn't print. No error message, though.
o I have opened http://localhost:631 and reviewed the tail of the error log available from the CUPS server admin page. Note: You may need to switch error level in cupsd.conf to "debug" to see them!
o There was an error there about the libtiff.so.3 not found. I have found that there is a link /usr/lib/libtiff.so.4. I have created a /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3 link to point to the same file as libtiff.so.4.
o After I tried to print again, there was another error on the log file. This time about libpng.so.3, I think. I have fixed it the same way.
o And it worked. Printer responsiveness and quality as as from windoze.
