The most significant of all new PC technologies to arrive in 2004, PCI Express is a next generation bus technology that consolidates and will eventually replace the existing PCI and AGP buses used for connecting graphics processors and peripheral devices to today’s PCs.

With the arrival of the VIA K8T890 Series of core-logic chipsets, VIA brings PCI Express to the AMD64 processor platform for the first time. All VIA K8T890 Series chipsets are based on the unique VIA Flex Express Architecture, which enables the industry’s most flexible PCI Express implementation, as well as delivering a host of advanced features such as VIA DualGFX Express for enhanced multi-display support.

An active member of the PCI Special Interest Group, VIA is working closely with leading motherboard and OEM manufacturers to ensure the transition to PCI Express is as smooth as possible, bringing to market a broad range of flexible PCI Express compatible core-logic chipsets for the Intel and AMD processor platforms.

The first PCI Express chipset for the AMD platform, the VIA K8T890 chipset is designed to support a complete range of AMD Athlon™ 64, Athlon 64 FX, Opteron™, and Sempron™ processors. Offering blistering performance, comprehensive features, and rock solid stability, the VIA K8T890 chipset is optimized to work seamlessly with the latest PCI Express graphics cards via a PCI Express x16 connection with up to 4GB/s of dedicated graphics bandwidth per direction. The K8T890 chipset also supports up to four PCI Express x1 connections, each providing 250MB/s per direction bandwidth to PCI Express peripheral devices such as Gigabit Ethernet and HDTV tuner cards.

Forthcoming products from the VIA K8T890 Series will include other advanced features such as VIA DualGFX Express, which brings power multitasking to a wider audience, and integrated DX9 graphics with the S3 Graphics DeltaChrome™ IGP core.
