la Geforce 9600 gt è stata la prima della famiglia 9x00 ad arrivare sul mercato, il 21 febbraio 2008; la Geforce 9600 gso non è altro che una Geforce 8800 gs con un nuovo nome, le caratteristiche tecniche sono identiche; Al momento del lancio la Geforce 9600 gt aveva come rivale la Amd/Ati Radeon hd 3870, la 9800 gtx la AmdiAti Radeon hd 3870 x2 e la 9800 gx2 rappresentava la scheda più veloce del mercato ad un costo indicativo attorno ai 600 euro.
