Preview AMD Hammer
A questo indirizzo è apparsa un'interessante preview della futura cpu AMD Hammer a 64bit.
In the near future, the processor market will be stirred up again. ClawHammer will also fight with new P4s. Meanwhile, AMD can use its old gun, Athlon to shatter the threat of Intel. To wait and see is the best way to ensue. But what I hope is, that we can manage to buy 64 bit desktops for our homes. Since they are going to be more reliable, FAB30 of AMD in Dresden will be the new source of AMD for its processors. The factory in Dresden is working at 40% right now, leaving a room for Hammers. The time that is used for producing a Hammer is approximately 2.5 times longer than the time needed for an Athlon production. This grants us that the HammerÂ’s price will be a number in four digits or a number close to a four digit number. The first Hammer processor, ClawHammer will be released with 1 MB of L2 cache. On Itanium this number is 4 MB. The processor will be able to run WinXP and Linux, since both MS and Linux distributors like RedHat and SuSE are working closely with AMD. Also it is expected that Sun will release a new version of Solaris since it has a code running on x86 architecture. But it is sure that the metamorphosis from 32 bit to 64 bit will be less painful than the one from 16 bit to 32 bits.
