Platform Conference 2002 !

AMD had a good presentation about their new x86-64 CPU, more commonly known as the Hammer series. As you probably already know, AMD's Hammer line of CPU's (Clawhammer/Sledgehammer) will not only be 64-Bit compliant, but will fully support 32-Bit programs as well, allowing for excellent 32-Bit performance, and also compatibility and performance with new 64-Bit code. The new architecture adds 8 new integer registers and also full SSE/SSEII support. By fully supporting 32-Bit code natively, instead of emulating it, AMD is allowing for a smoother transition to 64-Bit applications. Intel is not choosing the same path as AMD, but rather implementing a 64-Bit only CPU, which will emulate 32-Bit. Though we have recently heard that Intel is implementing what they call Yamhill Technology into their new CPU's, which will enable true 32-Bit processing in their chips. This option will be able to be turned on or off at their discretion, based on the level of performance compared with AMD's Hammer line. So far, AMD's solution certainly looks better as it will allow a smoother transition. However, if Intel's 64-Bit chips can keep up with Hammer in 32-Bit applications, there will be no need to enable the Yamhill Technology.
