VIA acquisirà la divisione grafica di
ST Microelectronics (Kyro1/2) ?

THE STORY IS that Canaan-able firm Via is in discussions to buy the graphics division of ST Microelectronics, although there's still a little bit of negotiation to be done.
Sources say that that although the 3D intellectual property does belong to IMG, the Kyro semiconductors have some ST Micro intellectual property in there as well.

And there's the rub. Via, ST Micro and old Img are, we understand, in tete-a-tete-a-tete discussions over these intellectual property complexities.

The hopeful outcome is that Via will take over the Kyro II and Kyro III (Power VR Series 3) chipsets, and also wants to get its mitts on the Kyro III Series 4 stuff, which has not yet taped out.

We understand that although Via will be buying the IP for PowerVR series 3, 4 and 5, it also has to cross license some of ST Micro's intellectual property embedded in the baked products.

What happens after that? The speculation goes that Via may want to use some elements of its S3 technology with Power VR licensed designs. But that could create some little problems as Img wishes to continue to provide driver development and developer relations - not an insuperable hurdle, we understand.

These are the little details that like gravel in the stomach of a hen will help Via to digest everything and go-go-go with chipsets that use the highly thought of graphics technology.
