Cray stà progettando un supercomputer basato su 10000 cpu AMD OPTERON, in grado di fornire l'incredibile potenza di 40 TeraFlops... il nome di questa bestia è RedStorm.
Tale progetto rientra nell'ASC, un'iniziativa di costruire supercomputers per simulare esplosioni nucleari.
Questo sistema sorpasserà in prestazioni l'attuale supercomputer più potente sulla terra, ovvero il NEC’s Earth Simulator..
Come se non bastasse, tale computer sarà upgradabile fino a raggiungere la potenza di 60 TeraFlops.
Indubbiamente le cpu di AMD sono riconosciute come un'ottima soluzione per sistemi ad alte prestazioni, grazie all'ottima efficienza sia a 64bit che a 32bit, oltre che all'altrettanto ottima tecnologia Hypertransport..

CrayÂ’s project is called Red Storm, the supercomputer will offer peak performance of 40 teraflops and will incorporate 10 000 AMD Opteron CPUs. The monster will provide certain expansion capabilities and will eventually be able to make up to 60 trillion of operations (teraflops). The contract with Cray is part of the Department of Energy's Accelerated Strategic Computing (ASC) initiative to build supercomputers that can, among other complex tasks, simulate nuclear explosions. The supercomputer will be installed in Sandia National Laboratories and will cost about $90 million.
